Confident. Cool. Charming. Clever. Four words I would use to describe him. He's a confident ladiesman, and you can sense he's seen the way of the world on his piratey travels with Fran. Even at a time when he has bounty hunters at his heels, he remains calm. He's probably used to the situation by the time we meet him and Fran in the game. You have to be a pretty laidback guy not to let that sort of thing concern you! Either that or extremely confident about your fighting skills!

You could say that he has a somewhat stoic view on things; often speaking of the worst case scenario, but never lying down and admitting defeat. I think this state of mind is what keeps him so cool in heated situations, because it helps prepare him for hardships mentally. It's not often that we truly see Balthier surprised, or maybe it just doesn't come across on the surface.

He's a true leadertype personality and does not respond well to orders. If I would guess his zodiac, I'd say Aries. It's the first fiery sunsign and loves to lead the way, very spontaneous. The Aries' love a challenge, and a small dialogue between Balthier and Fran implicates that he does to:

Fran: "The Gods do not smile on us."
Balthier: "I like it better that way."

This doesn't mean he is quick to get himself into difficult situations. On the other hand he tries not to get involved with people who smell of trouble. For example, the first time himself, Vaan and Fran met princess Ashe, under the alias Amalia, he tried to sneak away. As the leadman he follows the beat of his own drum and getting involved with the resistance was not on his agenda, even if he doesn't hold much love for the Empire, which Ashe is fighting against.
